GBC BUSINESS:
o Meeting was called to order by Crystal Boone…officers introduced themselves to the guests during the meeting also stating their duties. Crystal went over new member packets with guest
o Crystal also went over the committees each person needed to sign up for explaining that each person was to participate on 2 committees for each year
o Stephanie (chair for Annual Trip Committee) gave prices for the trip to Vegas in August 27-30; rates were based on 4 people per roon; $104 deposit due in March will include the luncheon. Brian Smith (author) will be in attendance at luncheon to discuss his book
o Black History committee is to get together soon and decide the activity for February soon and get back with the group
o GBC Raleigh was invited to The Black Bookclub Rock Awards Banquet in Largo, MD June 20, 2009; GBC Raleigh can visit their web site and nominate ourselves for an award. The general consensus was not to attend due to those going to Vegas in August, but there were members who were interested in still going.
o 2 authors sent books to Crystal for the group to possibly read in the future

o Group outing suggestions:

· Money for annual trip is due 3/28/09 ($100 deposit)
· 501 c3 money due April

· No chapter dues in March because trip money will be due

· She will be looking for another company
· Dee agreed to look for another company as well
7. Independent Books
· It was decided that the club will read books by independent authors in September and October 2009
8. Club voted no to attending the Black Book Club Rock Awards

GBC BUSINESS:
1. Committee Updates
A. Black History
§ No update
B. Fundraising (ideas)
§ Ideas presented: carwash, raffle, book sale, jewelry sale
§ Have the carwash and raffle to start fundraising
§ The group will talk more about the jewelry sale during April’s meeting
§ Sell Soul Bowl tickets & GBC would receive 50% of each ticket sold
C. Parent’s Day Event
§ Possible cook-out at Pullen Park; Shiwanda sent email during the week with prices of shelters at the park; Angela agreed to cook for the event
§ Other venues will be looked at as well
§ It was also discussed turning Parent’s Day into Family Day due to not many children participating
D. Community service (ideas)
§ Lupus Walk; April 19, 2009 at North Hills @ 3pm; there is NO registration fee for this walk; GBC would register as a team; Dee sent out email detailing the walk after the meeting; we would need to set a fundraising goal for the Lupus Walk
§ Adopt another family during the holidays
E. Christmas Party
§ It was decided the Christmas Party would be discussed in the Fall
F. Birthday
§ Birthdays will be celebrated quarterly
§ Each member will receive $20 gift and a card
G. Annual Trip
· Beach trip early September
· Bus trip to New York ($79 leaving from Durham)
· Amusement Park
3. T-shirt Update
· Crystal gave update; screen print the t-shirts would be $277 and if the GBC logo were transferred from paper to shirt the cost would be $144; it was briefly discussed if each member would pay for their own shirt OR if the money would come out of GBC’s account. A final decision was not made
4. Independent Books
· It was decided at the last meeting the club would read books by independent authors during the months of September and October 2009
o Shirlita McFarland, Ndea B. (Too Good to Be True) OR Cheryl Robinson (In Love with A Younger Man)
· Crystal will contact authors to see if they would attend the September & October meetings

6. Other News:
a. Dee Turnbull’s birthday is April 18.
b. Stephanie Dickey is a Passion Party Consultant
7. Additions:
a. For the annual trip, the shopping trip to NY is planned for July.
b. For community service: The Breast Cancer Walk in May & Holiday Cheer (Christmas) and to do a feed during Thanksgiving. We have several community service projects and fundraiser to make sure that everyone is able to get their two community service projects and fundraisers. At our next meeting, we will have a gold/sterling silver sale. Members should bring their gold/silver. We will use the profit as a fundraiser. Depending on how well that goes, we may have another sale and open it to the public. Independent authors: We decided that we will invite authors to our Sept. and Oct. meetings. Those authors are: Shirlita McFarland, author of "Sunday Morning Secrets" and Ndea B, author of "Too Good To Be True". I will be contacting these authors to make sure that they are available during the months of September and October.

GBC BUSINESS:
1. Crystal reported no update from president’s conference call
2. Shiwanda gave update on 501c3
· $183 will be transferred from our account to help with funding
3. Shiwanda gave update on Issues meeting
· Crystal talked with Tamika about the attendance policy
· Tamika stated attendance policy could not be changed
· Dates could be changed to help with attendance
· Idea of leave of absence was brought up and voted on. Limit of 6 months and dues would still have to be paid
4. Treasurer’s report
· Current balance = $924.83

§ Tasha gave out tickets for the raffle
§ GPS system and movie/dinner certificate will be raffled
§ We need to raise at least $400
C. Parent’s Day Event
§ Nicole reported the new date for event is July 25,2009
§ It will be held at Pullen Park during hours of 9 am – 3 pm.
D. Community service
§ Tanika sent out e-mail about possibly working with the NC Food Bank by collecting food or volunteering there
§ Dee and Tasha attended the Lupus Walk on April 19, 2009 and reported it went well
E. Christmas Party
§ Tanika reported the budget is $500
§ Ideas for venue: Rum Runners, community clubhouse
F. Birthday
§ No update
§ Happy Birthday to Dee!
G. Annual Trip
· Stephanie reported that she is looking into trip options
· Wolf Lodge Water Park was mentioned

· No update
7. Independent Books
· Crystal reported she e-mailed the authors and they agreed to September and October dates
