GIRLFRIENDS
BOOK CLUB
RALEIGH CHAPTER

About Us

Girlfriends Book Club was founded in 2004 by four co-workers Tamika Shamberger, Michelle Powell, Shauner McClinton and Latoya Love. One afternoon while sitting around on their lunch break at work a question was posed. Why do young black women in our community not get together in social settings with out it involving our children, the men in our lives or the club scene? At that moment a friend said that her aunt had a African American book club and that they gather to discuss books once a month. We at that time thought that this would be a great idea and decided we should do the same. Tamika Shamberger generated an email and with much enthusiasm; from there the Girlfriends Book Club was formed.

Today the GBC has become more than just a book club but a sorority of sorts. The organization has since expanded from Sacramento to the Bay Area , Atlanta and Raleigh. We are currently seeking expansions all over the country. GBC has become an organization with bi-Laws, a mission statement, Governing Bodies, and Chapter Committees creating a highly organized and committed organization.

Mission Statement:

We evoke power, success, encouragement and love. We indulge in the finer things in life like dedication and truth. We are your strength when you need it and your weakness when you cant help it. We possess the qualities that only strong BLACK WOMEN personify. With all that we are, and all that we do; With the things we encounter and the obstacles we overcome; With the men that we love and the children that we raise. We lift our glass high and toast to Our GIRLFRIENDS.
